You can also search files shares for content and information using SharePoint search. To setup file share search, follow these steps:
1. Open SharePoint Central Administration site.
2. Click General Application Settings.
3. Click Farm Search Administration.
4. Click Search Service Application.
5. Click Content Sources under Crawling in the left side menu.
6. Click New Content Source.
7. In Name field, enter FSSearch. In Content Source Type select File Shares. In Start Addresses type the file share that you want to search. In Crawl Settings, you have two options. You can crawl the main folder and all subfolders or you can crawl only the main folder. Choose your preferred option. In Crawl Schedules, click Create Schedule under Full Crawl and setup a schedule. Click OK.
8. On Manage Content Sources page, right-click FSSearch content source and select Start Full Crawl. It will take some time for the crawling to complete depending on the amount of data in the file share.
9. Once the crawl is complete, go to SharePoint site and create search and search results pages. I will not repeat the steps in this section. Once you have created and configured the search pages, try out the search. Just remember one thing, you have to add contentsource:fssearch in the Query text box in the search results web part. FSSearch is the name of the content source you created in the previous step. By adding this content source in the Query text you limit the results to this content source only. See previous section for details if you have any confusion. You will see results for your searched term on a SharePoint page. This functionality is really useful for companies that hesitate in bringing all data from file shares into SharePoint. Some companies avoid it because of the storage costs and other limitations. SharePoint allows you to search files that are sitting outside SharePoint but still can be indexed and surfaced within SharePoint sites.
