Milking The SharePoint Cow

Milking The SharePoint Cow

SharePoint is one of the most successful products ever launched by Microsoft. It has been popular amongst enterprises because they take advantage of its rich features. On the other hand it is equally popular amongst people like me, the so called consultants, contractors, and geeks. Everyone has been milking this cow since 2004. I say 2004 because this was the time when SharePoint really started picking up. It hae been on the market since 2001 though. Sometimes I think what would I be without SharePoint. I was a PHP programmer before I jumped onto the SharePoint wagon and I must admit there has been no looking back since then. With SharePoint 2010 Microsoft has offerred so many rich features that you don't have to look around for small applications. It's a complete suite of applications that you can use in your organization. Microsoft earned approx. $1.3 billion in revenue in 2010 (*1). It was the hottest Microsoft product in 2011 and If you ask me, I believe it will still be hot in 2012. There is something for everyone in SharePoint 2010. Some of the most popular features in SharePoint 2010 are as following (*2):

1. SharePoint Business Connectivity Services
2. SharePoint Content Management Features
3. Social Computing Features
4. Business Intelligence
5. Enterprise Search

Full list of SharePoint 2010 features can be seen on the following page:

In early 2011, Mark Miller published SharePoint 2010 adoption survey results. I was present at that event where survey was conducted by Global 360 and EndUserSharePoint.com. According to the survey results, SharePoint 2010 adoption surged in 2010. Another important result was that SharePoint 2010 had solidified its position as mission critical part of IT and business.

Other industry experts also conducted surveys and all results pointed more or less to the same facts that SharePoint's popularity was on the rise. As mentioned above, SharePoint consulting firms, consultants, contractors, everyone took advantage of this gold mine called SharePoint. Specially companies that were Microsoft partners made new clients through out 2011 (*3). According to some statistics, 80% of the businesses are expected to be using SharePoint. Wow! 80%!!!! Can you believe it? SharePoint is not only for big companies any more. Small and medium businesses are also taking advantage. I have implemented SharePoint in retail businesses. Small retailers including gas and service stations are taking advantage of SharePoint. Recently, I implemented SharePoint Foundation 2010 at a gas station in Baltimore. Client is very happy working with SharePoint. They use it in conjunction with Microsoft Office that they were already using.

You can judge SharePoint's popularity from the fact that there is a serious shortage of good resources in the market. Companies are finding it hard to find good resources. SharePoint is so hot that I have seen people advising other people who are jobless to start learning SharePoint. I was recently conducting interviews for a client. We were interviewing SharePoint resources (developers) and I noticed that 60% of the people had never developed a SharePoint application. They sent their resume because they installed it last year on their home PC and they were so confident of finding a job that they sent their resume even though advertised position clearly said "SharePoint Developers with at least 2 years experience". We needed far more experienced resources but because we knew the market situation, we reduced the experience requirement to 2 years and still found it difficult to find good experienced resources. If you went to dice.com and searched for "SharePoint" keyword, you'd find 3890 jobs even today. Usually job market becomes sluggish in December because of the festive season but SharePoint hiring is continuing despite the cold chilly weather, negative comments everywhere regarding the economy and the holidays in the final days of December.

Training companies also made big money. Organizations needed trainers on site to train end users. Demand for SharePoint training was such that online trainers also jumped in and made money by providing training online. Online training is not new but if you look at the number of companies that provided online SharePoint trainings in 2011, you'd be amazed.

Ask companies that make products for SharePoint! How their profits surged by selling SharePoint products! Selling is an art. If you know how to sell and if you are selling SharePoint products, the combination is deadly. You are destined to make good money. I know several small vendors that include personal friends as well. They made fortunes by selling SharePoint web parts to clients in Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland. Just imagine, if they could make money just by selling web parts, think about the big vendors who sell full SharePoint application suites.

Good news is that SharePoint cow is still healthy and can feed a lot more people in 2012. Companies need resources. Contractors and consultants need more money. People working with SharePoint were happy in 2011. The way things are at the moment, it is apparent that 2012 will bring more joy on the faces of SharePoint consultants and contractors.

These are my feelings about SharePoint. You are more than welcome to add your experiences and opinions on SharePoint. In fact, it may turn into a healthy debate. I know some people will scream about the annoyances that irritate the developer community but facts are facts. Inspite of those annoyances and shortcomings, we still love SharePoint. To the world, SharePoint is a great product, it's a software for the enterprises but for me, it's my livelihood. I live and breathe SharePoint.

THANK YOU SHAREPOINT!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

SharePoint 2010 Search: Crawl content

After SharePoint 2010 has been installed, you may want to configure its search. SharePoint's search engine technology is regarded as one of the world's best technologies. By default, search service application is started. If you have created any content in SharePoint sites, try searching something in the sites, search will find nothing. This is because content has not been crawled yet. To index content, do following:

1. Go to Central Administration.
2. Click General Application Settings.
3. Click Farm Search Administration.
4. Click Search Service Application.
5. In the left side menu, under Crawling, click Content Sources.
6. In the content sources, you will find Local SharePoint sites. Hover mouse over it, a drop down will appear. Open drop down and select Start Full Crawl. The crawl time will depend on the size of content you have in your sites. If it's a new site, it will take approx. 2 - 3 minutes to complete the crawl. When the crawling has finished. Go back to your site and search for something and this time search will show you results. So you have accomplished your first goal, you have indexed content.

Where is master page link in SharePoint site?

Have you seen people asking this question? Me too. It is not obvious for  beginners. Most tutorials on the net tell them to locate it under Look and Feel in Site Settings but it is not there and so users get confused. Well for those who have not figured out  yet, it is not there because you have not enabled publishing feature on your site.

1. Go to Site Settings.
2. Under Site Actions, click Manage site features

3. Enable SharePoint Server Publishing

4. Go back to Site Settings and you will see Master page under Look and Feel.
