Microsoft has released a web based tool that can be used to build PowerShell cmdlets for SharePoint. This is a great tool for those that are new to SharePoint PowerShell or PowerShell in general. It allows you to drag and drop a PowerShell verb and noun into a design surface and then input your specific SharePoint information such as farm, site collection database etc to complete the cmdlet. Once you have the cmdlet designed you can copy it out and can run it on your server. Microsoft announced this tool At the 2011 SharePoint Conference in Anaheim, CA which I was at. I missed that announcement and learned about this tool from Russ Kaufmann’s blog. Thanks Russ!

SharePoint 2013 - Workflows ( Via Furuknap )

I recently wrote about the future of SharePoint (also here onnothingButSharePoint) and one of my main wishes was for something like Nintex to be built into SharePoint. Now its pretty clear this isn't going to happen any time soon (Microsoft would have to buy them, then incorporate the technology). Whilst I'd put money on this being in the Nintex business plan, it isn't going to happen for SharePoint 2013 (or whatever it ends up being called).

However it has been pointed out to me that some information is leaking out about new workflow features, possibly being made available to users in the next version of SharePoint Designer. Bjørn Furuknap has an interesting blog here, with a number of posts on possible SharePoint 2013 features here. He seems to think loops (something lots of people wantin SharePoint Designer) and state machines are on the cards. Obviously it is all (informed) speculation as this stage, but it makes interesting reading none the less.

SharePoint FAQ on DST and October 9th Public Update ( Via joeloleson )

I've gotten some questions asked on the hotfix and public update I wanted to address here. Product Support and a few PFEs helped me with these. Thanks guys!

Q. Do I need to install both the MOSS and WSS public updates?

A. Yes, best practice would be to install WSS 3.0 first then MOSS 2007.

Q. If I have to choose between the public update (Oct 9) and the DST patch which should I install?

A. The public update includes the DST and we recommend you install that.

Q. What if I don't want to install the public update?

A. You should at minimum install the WSS DST patch on your WSS and MOSS Servers.

Q. What will happen if I don't do anything.

A. On October 28th your timer jobs will be off by 1 hour and without the public update the cross site scripting vulnerability will be present amongst other less important fixes.

Q. Do I need to install the update on all my servers? and Do I need to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard on every server?”.

A. The answer to both is Yes. The configuration wizard may not launch, but this is still a key required step.

Q. I just installed a new MOSS Server today. What should I install?

A. Install the MOSS RTM, then install the Oct 9 Public Update for WSS, then MOSS and follow the instructions. Then I'd recommend running windows update to get the latest public .NET hotfixes.
