October 2010: SharePoint 2007 Cumulative Updates and Internal Version Numbers ( via Chris McNulty)

Extracted

“It’s the end of another even numbered month, so it’s time for the latest Cumulative Update pack for SharePoint 2007. And a reminder -- SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 2 is now a required prerequisite – SP1 is no longer supported.

If you ever need to confirm which update/revision of SharePoint you are running, without accessing the binary files themselves, you can find this in SharePoint Central Administration. Go to the Operations tab, and under Topology and Services”

SharePoint 2010 Server CU’s and SP’s do not need Foundation!!! (Via Brad Saide)

Excerpt from original post: “I’ve been trying to find an “official position” from Microsoft on this for a while now, and it seems that Stefan has got an explanation as to why the Foundation Cumulative Update does not need to be installed before the Server Updates (as well as confirming that they are not…) – http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2011/03/04/delayed-february-2011-cu-for-sharepoint-2010-is-now-available.aspx – Essentially in 2007 you could be on a different hotfix level between Server and WSS, but in 2010 there are dependencies on Foundation so the hotfixes will ALWAYS be packaged together.”
