BERT versus GPT: Which AI model is the Best?

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been extolled by businesses and individuals because of its immense capabilities. With this, BERT and ChatGPT came into competition and now both are striving for supremacy. Both of these chatbots are efficient at comprehending and generating human-like responses. The two are undeniably powerful in terms of performance, but it seems like users are lunging more towards ChatGPT since the release of its latest version. In this blog, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these two competitors. So, keep on reading!

ChatGPT 3 and ChatGPT 4

ChatGPT 3 is an AI model developed by OpenAI which helps individuals to perform a number of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks including language translation, answering queries and also summarizing text, but the input and output is limited to 3000 words. This model is trained on 570 gigabytes of Internet text and has 175 billion parameters. Its versatility allows it to adapt to changes in a conversation, no matter how complex the request is. This autoregressive language model is helping companies in code building, providing customer support, data analysis, creating website mockups, interpretation of different languages etc. Later, in this year OpenAI released an enhanced version called the GPT 4. This multimodal large language model has the ability to transform images into texts and interpret it. Since it is trained on 100 trillion parameters (i.e. books, Wikipedia and various other online resources) it can perform many complex tasks. Companies like Duolingo have already incorporated both these models in their operations and many of them are using it for app animations due to its precision, creativity and accuracy.

BERT

BERT, the acronym stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer. It is a product of Google that is best at performing sentiment analysis and helps in natural language understanding (NLU). This model has 340 million parameters and is pretrained on 2.500 million Wikipedia words and 800 million Book Corpus. Its feature of bi-directionality provides better understanding of the context. This tool is very useful for text generation, summarization and question answering. Through its mask language model (MLM) the meaning and context of hidden words can be predicted.

A Comparison

Both GPT and BERT are based on transformer architecture that has many layers. The main difference between the two is that GPT generates text in one direction (i.e. from left to right) because of its autoregressive transformer decoder. This means it predicts the next word on the basis of its relation with the previous word. While BERT processes in both directions for an accurate contextual understanding (i.e. right to left and left to right).

In conclusion, both ChatGPT and BERT are invaluable NLP tools that are all set to revolutionize the world with their extensive capabilities. BERT is more suitable for tasks that require in-depth understanding of the context while GPT has an edge in text generation.

Best ChatGPT Alternatives

ChatGPT became an overnight sensation as soon as it was made publicly available to people in November, 2022. Artificial Intelligence is already called the muse of the technological world and the addition of generative AI chatbots have in turn stirred up excitement among people. ChatGPT's amazing features such as answering queries, writing articles and codes have been beneficial in many ways but also disadvantageous for some people. Many tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon were already on their mission to come up with similar models like the AI powered Natural Language Processing tools and now they have to catch up with ChatGPT as well. The competition is getting stronger. Let’s see who is delivering the best services to the users.

Amazon Codewhisperer

In order to help software developers and programmers to detect, understand or debug code issues, Amazon created and launched its Codewhisperer. This tool is powered by machine learning service and makes use of natural language processing technology to recommend and suggest codes in real time. Patterns and errors are identified by analyzing the codes and then solutions are proposed. Amazon’s codewhisperer is available for free and it also integrates another development tool known as the GitHub for better service. Codewhisperer has improved the productivity of developers by analyzing their prior codes and comments.

Microsoft Bing AI

Microsoft has been investing in OpenAl for the past couple of years. As ChatGPT, the product of OpenAl gained popularity and recognition, the company became more determined to invest in it. A little while back, the tech giant has successfully released its own version of generative AI chatbot called the Bing Al, making the most out of their partnership. The company aims to deliver maximum speed, accuracy and efficiency through this new model. This tool is superior in terms of performance and delivers better results as compared to ChatGPT and GPT-3. It provides you with comprehensive human-like responses and incorporates OpenAl language model platform. The "chat" tab helps users to interact with the chatbot while the "compose" tab provides you with options to create content such as emails, paragraphs or articles. But it seems like this tool is not too effective and needs more work as many people complained that it generates troubling responses. Only a limited version of Bing AI is currently available for free for public use.

Google Bard

Google bard is a competitor of ChatGPT which is powered by Google's Language Model for Dialog Applications (LaMDA). One interesting thing about this chatbot is that it is pre-trained with more than 1.56 trillion words and has around 137 billion parameters. LaMDA has worked upon three elements i.e. groundedness, quality and safety. With the finest Natural Language Processing (NLP) features, it generates responses that are coherent and human-like. Bard gives unique responses to the follow up questions and is still under testing. However, it is a good alternative to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT has gained mainstream success since the day it was launched but all these popular generative AI tools have their own flaws. The software working at the backend of these chatbots is not really groundbreaking. All of them are working on their inefficiencies, so at this moment it is hard to tell if they will be able to dethrone ChatGPT or not.

What's Incredible About the Latest GPT-4?

The murmur is all about GPT-4!

Chat GPT is already taking the world by storm. The technology has not yet fully sated the desire of AI experts who are still working on to improve and add more amazing features into it. The new and phenomenal version of Generative Pre-trained Transformer was officially announced on 13th March. This latest Chatbot of OpenAI, GPT-4 is highly advanced in terms of performance and features. Its unique features were unfolded through livestreaming on YouTube and it quickly received large scale public validation. One thing to note is that GPT-4 is grounded upon the prior series i.e. GPT 3.5 and can generate text that is almost indistinguishable from human speech. It has 100 trillion machine learning parameters (more than GPT 3.5). However, unlike GPT 3.5 it is not available for free. Those who were impatiently waiting for this series to release have to avail this service (Chat GPT Plus) by paying a subscription fee that is $20 per month.

This language model will also be useful for software developers and engineers as an Application Programming Interface (API). It will allow them to build and create applications or websites along with other services. Developers can easily understand the complex coding with the help of GPT-4. It will even help them to write generic codes or functions which will in turn increase their efficiency. Many of the well-known businesses such as Khan Academy and Duolingo are already using it and making the most out of this new technology.

What's new?

GPT-4 has been released after undergoing extensive testing. The fourth updated version of OpenAI software is more powerful as compared to its predecessors. Studies have shown that it is 40% more reliable and accurate in generating responses as it is trained according to human feedback. This new language model is based upon deep learning technology and has the ability to understand human speech. It makes use of artificial neural networks in order to write and generate human-like responses. As per OpenAI, this version is outstanding in areas such as creativity, context and visual input. In simple words, GPT-4 is way ahead in terms of creativity than previous models. It fully understands, learns and copies the user’s way of writing. In this way it collaborates and provides them ideas for their creative tasks and projects for example creative writing, technical writing, lyrics, screen plays etc. From a visual aspect, GPT-4 uses images for the purpose of interaction and to generate responses. For example, you can share a picture with different cooking ingredients and it will tell you what dishes or recipes you can make out of those. Longer context means that it can interact with the content and process a maximum of 25000 words from the text.

GPT-4 is attracting many individuals from different employment backgrounds such as software developers and bankers. Critics say that it will lead to a widespread disruption in the way different businesses operate and work. Others argued that social biases are still there. Many work oriented individuals are now apprehensive and have expressed their concerns that the future of the global job market will be at stake. The technology might disturb the entire education system and negatively impact the learning and thinking abilities of students. So GPT-4 is not the perfect model and AI experts are still working on it to address the prevailing issues.

Usefulness and Drawbacks of GPT-3

GPT-3 is the product that was released after years of hard work. Experts have been scratching their heads in their Artificial Intelligence workrooms and labs. However, many researchers and tech savvy individuals have a wavering opinion on this technology. Some have been emphasizing that it is very impressive and will be a powerful technology in the future while others assert that it is very misleading. So, let's have a detailed discussion and learn more about this new chatbot.

What is GPT-3?

GPT-3, also referred to as the third generation Generative Pre trained Transformer, is the latest version of this model that is trained in advance to perform a wide range of natural language tasks. It is a neural network backed by AI technology that generates any kind of human text by using internet data and algorithms. Having more than 175 billion parameters it has surpassed and knocked out all the previous versions and around 300 applications are now using this model.

Usefulness of GPT-3

It’s a huge challenge for machines to produce a vast amount of content that is realistic and qualitative, though it requires very less input text. But GPT-3 produces text or data that is understandable for example blog posts, essays, articles, poetry and prose, news reports, marketing or advertising posts and everything that comes under creative writing. It can even imitate and adopt the style of prolific writers from the past. In terms of entertainment, GPT-3 has been serving the gaming industry by creating visuals, images, graphics, and chat dialogues etc. In marketing, it provides better insights to companies regarding their customers’ preferences, needs or wants through Viable. This startup interprets and recognizes the feelings, emotions and themes behind surveys, reviews and live chat logs and gives a quick crux and summary based on customers’ feedback and experiences. It can also translate languages, answer trivia questions, create memos etc.

Drawbacks of GPT-3

Though OpenAl developed this updated version of GPT, but it has sparked controversies among the engineers and experts who argue that though this model is remarkable and fast but has its shortcomings too. The language produced by this model promotes biases, hate and disinformation (spreads fake news in the form of editorial or opinion articles) as it learns and inherits everything from data available on the internet. Developers also say that this system has been encouraging racism and prejudiced approach (for example the machine adopts human characteristics such as portraying Muslims as Terrorist or vilifying Black people).

There are also exceptions in which GPT-3 does not befit i.e. high stake cases because it can mislead people where it’s a matter of life and death. For example the machine might generate automated content that highlights benefits of detrimental drugs. The computer code that this model writes needs adjustments and modification from human engineers’ and programmers. Apart from that, processing the vast amount of information from the internet is not easy, it requires specialized forms of computers that are expensive to operate. The output system also needs improvement so developers are constantly beavering away to come up with a flawless and advanced version of GPT-3 with no drawbacks.

Is ChatGPT a Game Changer?

Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has gained significant appreciation from public because of its phenomenal performance since November, 2022. Millions of people are currently using this technology and making the most out of it. Chat GPT chatbot is backed by OpenAI technology and makes use of deep learning in order to come up with conversations and responses just like humans. The artificial neural networks are trained in such a way that it is easy for Chat GPT to imitate human thinking abilities.

Chat GPT has edge over other chatbots in terms of datasets. Since it is trained on large datasets, it can perform a number of activities and tasks belonging to various sectors and fields. It helps in answering questions, follows human guidelines, and generates content in multiple languages through large swathes of data available on the internet. You can give command to Chat GPT to explain the process of photosynthesis or write an essay on human rights and the answer will appear on your screen right there and then. It not only helps businesses to devise strategies but also assists students in completing their assignments/homework by simply signing up for free. However, schools, universities and educational institutions are coming up with plagiarism checking tools that will empower them to detect AI. Interesting, it can also write programming code by analyzing and following the steps that programmers and developer take. Chat GPT does not accept inappropriate requests or commands (For example request that are discriminatory or demeaning). It also helps to conduct research but unlike Google it would not give you links or citations for it.

Whenever a new technology comes into play, people are quick to respond and same goes for Chat GPT. From marketing perspective, Chat GPT is in the stage where public reaches the height of excitement but it cannot take place of humans entirely, though it has been serving marketers in many ways. It can provide exceptional customer service and support by engaging with them, responding to their queries, concerns and FAQ's in a timely and humanly manner. In this way Chat GPT has allowed companies to effectively utilize its resources, directing staff towards more intellectual, demanding and technical tasks that require more human involvement and prudence. Chat GPT can be attuned and trained in different languages, can update or modify the product description and even send personalized messages with creative content to customers, making them feel satisfied through its efficient service.

If there are no human interventions, it will be quite difficult to capitalize on Chat GPT and the customer-company relationship would not be meaningful. Another down side is that the content is not always free from errors or accurate as warned by OpenAI. Though you might find it insightful but sometimes the answers are off the beam and you have to review and edit it so that the information or message is in line with the brand image. Also, too much reliance on Chat GPT can create hurdles in the path of human creativity and thinking ability. Once you come up with an effective marketing strategy it is better to use Chat GPT afterwards just for the sake of idea generation. This is important because without a strong and persuasive marketing strategy company will not have a competitive edge.

Chat GPT has been blowing everyone’s mind through its broad expertise. However, it seems like a bubble and the spark might be short lived since it’s not smart enough to take place of human brain.
